Thirty minutes from where I grew up, there's a psychiatric hospital with thousands of unmarked graves on its property. The state knew they were there. When it came time to develop the land, they dug anyway.

Why memory
archaeology?
Everybody wants to document the big stuff. Elections, disasters, famous people dying. I'm more interested in the parts nobody thinks to write down. The layout of a Toys R Us at Christmas. The menu screen music on a rented DVD. The way the Scholastic book fair made us feel.
